It’s no secret that some of the best Italian subs in America are in New Jersey. But not necessarily where you might think.
According to Mashed.comtwo of the top 15 submarines in the country are made in South Jersey: one in May’s Landing, the other in Atlantic City.
Sugar Hill Sub Shop at Mays Landing could be mistaken for another roadside gas station. However, the unassuming hoagie joint has some of the best around, customers say.
The sub to get, according to Mashed.com, is The Italian Stallion: a variety of charcuterie, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, and oil and vinegar or mayonnaise on Italian white bread.
The White House Special at the White House Sub Shop in Atlantic City is the other best NJ grinder, says Mashed.com.
“When it comes to America’s Best Italian Sub, Jersey’s White House Sub Shop has the sandwich and history on its side,” the website says.
“The hype is well deserved at the White House, and for beach dwellers and Hard Rock Hotel high rollers, the White House Special is the sub of choice.”
The Beatles stopped by the White House after a concert in Atlantic City in 1964, WeirdNJ.com said. If that’s not enough, the shop has Guy Fieri’s seal of approval and has been featured on Food Network.
The hoagie contains capicola, ham and salami, and is topped with lettuce and tomato. There are onions on the side, as well as sweet peppers.
