Brentford B’s Alex Gilbert feels the team are moving in the right direction after getting another pre-season game under his belt on Saturday.
The narrow loss to Maidenhead as well as the win over Salisbury the previous week puts the side in a position where they head to Wales for a training camp looking to build from a solid base after building their fitness in recent weeks at Jersey Road.
“It’s good to have more minutes and we haven’t had any injuries from any of the guys which is always positive,” said Alex. “It’s tough when guys come to us on trial and some come from the first team to have all the chemistry, but I think we did well. We had spells on the ball to move it but we couldn’t get that final ball across the line.”
Alex wore the captain’s armband at York Road as well as against Salisbury before, with the central midfielder putting in impressive displays as he sought to drive the Bees forward from midfield. On his form and his own physical condition, Alex said: “When you come back for the first time and you haven’t played in a while, the adrenaline can get high which means you can force some things and rushing things, so it’s all about keeping a calm head and trying to play. Hopefully we can keep playing and score more goals.
“I feel good, I was doing a lot of work before coming back. As we know, Neil pushes us a lot, so we’re all putting ourselves in a good position now and hopefully we can continue to build on that in the Country. We haven’t been back for a long time and the predominant focus has been on running and fitness so we haven’t had much time to work on set pieces. Like I said, there are new guys and these things will come.
Looking ahead to the trip to South Wales next week, Alex believes this will be another opportunity for the team to bond more.
He added: “It will be great because you can see each other away from the normal training environment, you can be in the hotel and have chances to bond with each other. Hopefully that will create a stronger chemistry for us.”
