JOHANNESBURG — Cosatu has made several recommendations against a delegate accused of rape at its 14th national convention.

The union federation responded to complaints on Wednesday evening after reports that a 20-year-old girl had been raped by union delegate Ceppwawu at the Regal Hotel in Midrand.

The shop steward was arrested on the second day of the congress and has since appeared in Randburg District Court.

Nkosana Dolopi, from Cosatu, said the union had been called upon to conduct an internal investigation into the matter.

“We want to urge the national congress to allow the police to continue what they will do. We also want Ceppwawu to continue with their internal processes and avoid a discussion on the ground that could affect both of these processes.”

Dolopi said several other recommendations were made.

“Cosatu must continue to implement policies and procedures to prevent and address cases of sexual harassment and violence, including educating its members and ensuring that all are committed against gender-based violence in all its forms. .”

The Navy’s one-stop hotel reservations center expects to take more than a million calls a year now that it’s expanded to handle accommodation requests at Marine Corps bases around the world.

That should equate to about 900,000 annual bookings, according to Navy Exchange Service Command spokeswoman Kristine Sturkie. This is an increase from the 500,000 calls and 400,000 reservations the center has handled each year since 2016.

“Having reservations centrally managed by highly trained DOD Reservations Center staff allows front desk customer service associates to focus on the needs of customers currently in-house, improving the overall guest experience. customers,” she told Stars and Stripes. in an email this week.

Established in 1984 as a central reservations center, the NEXCOM-operated service initially reserved rooms only for Navy Lodge guests before expanding to include Navy Gateway Inns & Suites.

In 2012, the name changed to the Department of Defense Reservations Center in anticipation of expansion of reservation services to other service branches. It began processing Marine Corps accommodation requests on September 12.

FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WTVD) — Fayetteville officials are stepping in to lend a helping hand to people fleeing Hurricane Ian.

The Fayetteville-area Convention and Visitors Bureau has launched a new website displaying information about which hotels evacuees can go to, how many rooms are available and who to contact in case of an emergency.

Nearly 30 hotels are joining the effort. Officials say the site is often updated every day and they try to show solidarity.

“This community is such a caring community, to begin with,” said Randy Fiveash, interim president and CEO of the Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It goes back to our roots of caring for soldiers, embracing soldiers and embracing soldiers. So I think it’s just an offshoot of us saying, ‘we just want to be helpful.'”

Evacuees said the hurricane was already causing stress in their Florida neighborhoods.

“You expect people to start hoarding,” said Bryan Delaney of the Lakeland, Florida area. “That’s what we saw this weekend at the supermarket, at the gas station.”

A Windsor family say they are impressed with the recommendations after an inquest into the death of Matthew Mahoney, who died after a confrontation with police.

Michael Mahoney believes the five-person jury that oversaw the inquest into his brother Matthew’s death went above and beyond.

“It’s very clear from the recommendations that they’ve looked very carefully at the evidence presented to them, and they’ve looked very carefully at the testimony of the experts who presented that evidence,” says Michael Mahoney.

The recommendations came after 10 days of testimonials and submissions.

Matthew Mahoney, who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia, was 33 when he was shot and killed by two Windsor police officers on the morning of March 21, 2018.

The jury determined that Matthew’s death was a homicide, which the Mahoney family agrees with. Michael Mahoney says testimony showed his brother made three attempts to evade police before the incident happened.

“To suggest that it was a suicide, someone trying to evade the police and get away from them, it just didn’t make sense,” says Michael Mahoney.

One recommendation the family considered thoughtful called for the creation of a mental health advocate role that would build a bridge between a person’s care team and family members.

“In this investigation, we talked a lot about the number of times we tried to provide information to doctors, social workers and other members of Matthew’s care team and we were never able to reach anyone. whatever,” says Michael Mahoney.
