England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB)

It’s great to be back in Perth. I spent two years here with the Perth Scorchers, and having the opportunity to play at Perth Stadium for our World Cup opener will be very special.

I feel good after my ankle injury. I have been working tirelessly with English physio Craig de Weymarn to get in shape and after intense rehabilitation I am ready to play.

For the past two months I have been icing my ankle daily to control swelling and improve my movement and flexibility. After warming up in Brisbane against Pakistan last Monday, I’m ready for the intensity of a world tournament.

The Australian tour so far has been very cold. It helps that we play great cricket, and just as important we have the freedom to explore and get out of the hotel from the COVID lockdown and isolation.

Australia is a fun place, and there’s plenty to do and explore. I managed to catch up with some friends in Perth, whom I haven’t seen for a few years and visited some of the great cafes in town and went to Scarborough Beach for a few afternoons, about 30 minutes . drive from town and has great surfing beaches.

Our first game on Saturday is against Afghanistan. We know it will be a tough game and they have a team full of winners. Their recent form in this format has been excellent and they deserve to be here, having qualified as one of the top eight teams in the world.

At this level, there are no secrets, and each player knows each other’s strengths and weaknesses, we have a good idea of how Afghanistan will play, and they will know everything about us. That’s the beauty of franchise cricket.

Take Afghan spinner Rashid Khan, he’s a good pal, and we all know what he can do to damage a team with his variations. He is the best spinner in the world in this format. It will be a handful. We have our own spin assistant Adil Rashid and a match for any player in this competition. We have prepared well and are ready for what Afghanistan is going to throw at us.

Perth Stadium and Ground will provide exciting cricket. The new stadium is one of the best and in my top three. With a decent crowd, it offers an electric atmosphere.

The location is idyllic on the banks of the Swan River, and they have done a great job of landscaping this imposing place with a park and pathways. It is a privilege to be here.

As for the throw, it will be fast and must have good lift and a good rebound. The beauty is that he will have something for the rapids, will come for the spinners, and hitters should be able to play through the ball with the knowledge and confidence to clear the ropes. It should be an exciting watch for fans.

I can’t wait to get started and hope we start our campaign with a win.

Plug in and enjoy!
